General: The route Vigla Challenge, is the new route that will replace (for 2017) the Nymfaio-Kleisoura-Kastoria-Vigla route. It is a demanding route, with a length of 112 km and is adressed to both experienced and inexperienced athletes.
Itinerary: New Park (prestart)-City round-Mesonisi(Race Start)-Vevi-Kelly(S.S.)- Petron Lake- Kleidi-Sitaria-Itea – Caucasus (S.S.) – Ano Kalliniki -Florina – Ano Kleines – Akritas (S.S) – Vigla Ski Resort (Finish).
Description: After the prestart from New Park, we ride around the city center for 3 km , of which 200 m., are on a paved road besides Sakouleva River. We cycle pass the New Park and continue to the runabout, exiting Florina.
Passing beneath the junction, we cycle towards the old road near Mesonisi. At the first hill [8th km] the race officially starts and we continue to the intersection of Meliti. Turn right, and after a little we past Sitaria and continue to Vevi. The route is ideal for warming up.
At the traffic lights, we turn left and soon we are in the village of Vevi [25th km]. A short but steep climb [15%] will get us out of the village, and the ascent to Kelly has already begun. The climb is about 8 km long, with a mix of small descents and steep climbs.
Arriving Kelli, we find the first Supply Station [33rd km] and descend to Lake Petron. The descent requires attention because it is technical one, but compensates us with good tarmac and the view to the lake.
Next to the lake, we pass through the village Petres (from which the lake got its name), ending outside Amyntaio, turn right and and take the road to Florina, going up the mountain towards Kleidi.
The climb to Kleidi is relatively easy and brings us back to the traffic lights of Vevi. From there it starts a straight of 20 km, until the second S.S. [74th Km], outside the village Caucasus.
Passing S.S. we reach the junction, turn left and continue. After 3 km, we pass through the Ano Kalliniki, continue for another 7 km, reachibg the suburbs of Florina. We cycle outside of the city and basically we do an inversion, continuing on the road to Ano Kleines.
As we approach Ano Kleines, we turn left, crossing the village and at the exit of it, the ascent of Akritas begins (which is the same as last year’s race).
The first 5 km are easy, the slope going up, as we pass the chapel of St. George. From there, we still have 3 km to the village Akritas. In the village there is the third and last S.S. [102nd km].
Passing the village, the road descends for about 1 km. Then, eight hairpins start unfolding, with an average slope (for the next 5 km) at 7%. We still have four kilometers with an average slope at 6.5% until we reach the Vigla Ski Resort on our finish.
Have a good race!
